Physical Education
Boardsmill N.S. is committed to providing high-quality Physical Education to all pupils. All classes receive 60 minutes of formal PE lessons each week and active homework is assigned weekly. All classes are taught the strands of Athletics, Dance, Gymnastics, Games and Outdoor & Adventure each year. Pupils also partake in PAWS - A Primary Aquatics Water Safety Program.
Teachers use a variety of resources to guide them in delivering quality PE lessons. PSSI Lesson Plans are widely used throughout the school. We recently introduced the Move Well, Move Often programme to teach the Fundamental Movement Skills to all pupils.
Please see individual class pages to see what everyone is getting up to in PE this year.
PE Store Room
We recently built a new PE store room which is now located just off our PE Hall. We store our PE equipment in boxes which are clearly labelled. This helps us to keep our PE store clean, safe and tidy.
PE Hall
As part of improving P.E in our school we have had four basketball hoops installed. We had the P.E hall floor marked for basketball and badminton.
Curriculum focus: Gymnastics
We chose gymnastics as the curriculum area to focus on for development this year. Ms Lennon and Ms Howard shared what they had learned at the Physical Literacy seminar with the rest of the teachers during a Croke Park hour. Focus on movement, balance and shape was enhanced by using the resources from the PDST/Scoilnet website and music recommended by the PDST.
Physical Education Notice Board
Our new physical Education notice board located just outside the school hall provides all teachers with easy access to lesson ideas, resources and information on the Move Well, Move Often programme.
Gymnastics
The Strand of gymnastics is taught in each class throughout the year.
Dance
During Active Schools week the whole school was involved in dancing in the hall.
Tennis
Aquatics - PAWS
Water Safety Ireland Primary Aquatics Water Safety Programme is taught in June each year.
Inclusion PE Lessons
Following the teacher’s training in inclusive PE activities, the senior classes had the opportunity to try out some fun games.
