Green Schools Travel Flag

Clean Air Week 2024

It’s that time of year again to remind ourselves to care about our air.

As you know, Scoil Naomh Bríde is taking part in the Green-Schools programme and are now working on the Travel theme.

As part of our work on promoting sustainable travel to and from school, we have decided to launch a “No Idling” campaign outside the school gates.

From 25th November ’24 all vehicle owners are asked to turn their engines off whilst they wait to help improve air quality, reduce emissions and create a healthier environment around our school gates.

More information on idling is available below and on our Green-Schools noticeboard.

By making this simple change, we can make a real difference and improve the quality of air we all breathe.

Each child has received a ‘No Idling’ pledge slip. It would be great if you could sign and return it to show our commitment to the Travel Flag which covers many aspects of travel and road safety.

Let’s give it a go!

We would like to thank you for your continued support, and we will keep you updated.

Super work from 2nd Class for Clean Air Week

Some Facts About Idling

A little bit of science to support our cause…

A few facts and figures about idling….

Walking Bus

Well done to everyone who tried to travel more sustainably for travel week. We have a large number of pupils getting the bus. The park and ride was very successful. Parents dropped the children to Boardsmill Hall and they had a short walk to school.Pupils in 5th and 6th class pictured below on the walking bus.

Walking bus

6th class pupils played a traffic game with 2nd class as part of travel week.

Cycling Safety

The children in 3rd Class participating in their 6 week Cycling Safely course which they do each year.

Scooter Safety

The children from First, Second and Third Class participated in a ‘Scooter Safety’ workshop to develop an understanding of sustainable transport. In order to facilitate smaller groups, the children from 6th Class organised alternative activities while children waited.

SPEED DETECTIVES

Our Speed Detectives were out checking the speed of vehicles as they passed our school. The news wasn’t good. We are asking all vehicles to slow down and obey the speed limit.

As a Green School, our school has been invited to enter The BIG TRAVEL Challenge. We have been asked to achieve a measurable increase in one or more of the following modes of travel: walking, wheeling, cycling, scooting, park’n’ride, carpooling, or public transport. We are also being asked to raise awareness of the impact of sustainable travel.

Given that we are a rural school our focus is on promoting car-pooling and the use of public transport in particular.

Any help in achieving an increase in any of the modes of travel listed above would be greatly appreciated. We could even win prizes!!!
